I really like reading Freddie deBoer’s Substack. I don’t buy everything he’s selling, but he’s a fantastic writer, and I was pleasantly surprised to get a linkback from him in his monthly “subscriber writing” post. It was the Illustrated Guide to Plastic Straws, where we show how the most important thing you can do to reduce the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is throw your plastic in the regular garbage instead of the recycling bin, which makes me suspect he didn’t actually read it given his audience, but I’ll take what I can get. In honor of that, this months’ housekeeping is going to include links to many of the publications run by HWFO community members.
Liv Boeree’s Youtube channel about poker, science, effective altruism, and rationalist concepts popularized by Scott Alexander.
Psychosecurity, Patrick Ryan’s newsletter about culture wars and autocults, which formed many of the same or similar analysis sets HWFO did from another direction.
From the New World, Brian Chau’s Substack, which is half podcast and draws a lot of thinkers adjacent to HWFO, including me.
Contextual Insurgency, Erin Smith’s Substack, which ranges widely from articles describing Antifa strategy and tactics to chronicling her trip to Ukraine in the early days of the war to bring them tourniquets and such.
The Jim Rutt Show, a podcast interview format with lots of interesting people on it, including me.
Wonderland Rules by Jay Rollins, which covers a range of topics and has a nice rundown of other Substacks he finds interesting.
Do Your Own Research by Alexandros Marinos, which is one of the best places to go for a third party view of contentious Covid-19 topics such as ivermectin and vaccine efficacy.
Macrodose by Henry Ballvings, which is in its early stages of content generation covering Covid, stocks, and other stuff.
I’m sure I missed some, and those are only publications among the subscribers who chat on our Slack server and not among free subscribers. If you’re not on Slack and you run a publication, reply below.
Subscription
This publication is and will always remain free to read, and any money earned through Substack subscriptions or Patreon will be dutifully spent on the author’s alcohol fund. Anyone who contributes to said alcohol fund will gain access to our private Slack server to discuss HWFO topics with other HWFO readers (and me) outside the public eye. Around 170 people are yammering away in there right now, and some of the article topics are born from these discussions. I’ll post an updated access link in a few days, as subscriber only content. If you’re a Patreon supporter you can gain access too, just email me.
