On September 14th, the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis flew two plane loads of illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard in a political stunt worthy of the title “Best Shiri’s Scissor of September.” We know it’s a stunt because he tipped his hand immediately afterwards, using the fact that Martha’s Vineyard immediately shipped the immigrants off to an Army base to troll them, calling their virtue signaling a fraud. All in all, a good way to get more publicity than Newsom in their respective runs up to the 2024 Post Biden election.
The problem here, I think, is that both sides are both playing virtue signaling games and neither is willing to bow up. If the sanctuary cities aren’t lying, they should want these immigrants and they should take them, not shuffle them off for the Army to deal with. If DeSantis isn’t toying with some Mexicans on a plane for publicity and wants to actually clear the borders, then he should send them. All of them. And in so doing, end the border crisis that’s being used as a canard by both sides.
You obviously can’t send two million people to Martha’s Vineyard, though, so if you’re going to solve the border crisis you have to evenly distribute them amongst the available sanctuary cities in a fair and equitable manner. Like this:
This is a relatively comprehensive list of US sanctuary cities according to the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, which has been trying to help people such as the ones stuck on the border for 80 years. The total population of US citizens who live in these cities is a little over 15 million. A fair and equitable distribution of illegal immigrants into these sanctuary cities would increase each city’s population by approximately 13.1%, by shipping the number of immigrants shown in the above table to each city. Seattle gets 97,325 immigrants, Eugene Oregon gets 22,381, Los Angeles gets 521,648, and so forth.
Republicans aren’t going to do this because they don’t actually want the immigrants in the country. Democrats aren’t going to accept them because they don’t actually want them in their cities either, they just want to claim to be more virtuous than the Republicans. But I want them to do this, because I think this is an easily resolved humanitarian crisis, I quite like Mexicans, and my four month pool project in my back yard is six months late because of labor shortages related to the post lockdown demand spike. In fact, I’m already on record saying I can host two in my home.
If 7% of the voters in those sanctuary cities will go in with me and host two a piece, we can nail this problem and everyone’s happy. Let’s do it.
Bingo amigo. Remember when Lori Lightfoot said she would pay for the bus ticket to Chicago? Well, Ron, send her the bill and start the buses rolling. Oh, odd to see Lori moving said aliens to the burbs (https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/burr-ridge-mayor-fires-back-at-lightfoot-pritzker-after-migrants-were-secretly-bussed-to-his-village).
I say Ron takes the H.L. Menken approach- if these people want to be a sanctuary city, let them have it, "good and hard."
Los Angeles may be already carrying its weight in this regard. It might well *have* 500k illegal immigrants.
