The bet counter-play against "media is subjectivity": the alternative of "mainstream media" is never objective enough to be usable, in fact "reality" and "social media" are synonyms of "take my word for it", and as such they are more subjective than the physical world, since nobody can see through the same eyes and live the same experience. "MSM" standardizes things into rhetorical objectivism, even if this object can be radically wrong (media bias) compared to physical counterparts.

To put it more bluntly, catching incentive bias in MSM is less work than putting up with the malice of individuals (unless someone is royally gullible and socially clueless), and that Hanson's Razor is somewhat useful in auto-tuning word of mouth. https://twitter.com/harmonylion1/status/1215694268599128064
